…like the federal prison in Peterson, Virginia, if his attorney's wishes are granted, after a political corruption conviction.
Robert Francis McDonnell served as the Governor of Virginia from January 2010 to January 2014. Running under the slogan "Bob's for Jobs", McDonnell promoted privatization and offshore oil drilling and he was able to cut the state's unemployment rate from 7.4% when he took office to 5.2% in December, 2013.
But fame and success didn't last long.
On January 14, 2014, McDonnell and his wife Maureen, a former Washington Redskins' cheerleader…
…were indicted for receiving improper gifts and loans.
Virginia businessman Jonnie Williams…
…turned state's evidence and testified against the McDonnell's. Both husband and wife – former Governor and First Lady in this case – were convicted on most of the corruption charges
The couple accepted gifts including a $6,500 engraved Rolex watch, $20,000 in designer clothing and accessories, and free family vacations in exchange for promoting a purported miracle cure made by Williams' Star Scientific Inc.
And on January 6, 2014, McDonnell was sentenced to 2 years in a federal prison, followed by two years of supervised release.
McDonnell had asked for no jail time and plans an appeal.
His estranged wife faces her own sentencing.
